Design Classics 2 – Skeksis

Skeksis (from The Dark Crystal):
When I was a child I was a huge fan of the muppets. I was also I huge fan of things like transformers and Star Wars, and noticed that it was always the baddies who had the best weapons or the best ships or the best robots. The muppets didn’t have any baddies so when The Dark Crystal came out and unleashed the Skeksis on the world I was agog.

Here you had all the surrealism of the muppets and the horror of The Thing (the Kurt Russel version) creating some sort of sinister, nightmarish creatures that you only had to look at to know that they were evil.

So, my sister quite rightly pointed out to me that they should be included in my design blog as they are easily some of the coolest creature designs ever. And further more they are made out of real materials – not cgi which adds so much more. Had The Dark Crystal been made today they would be cgi and they wouldn’t be half the creatures they are.
