Despite the sun and the unseasonable warmth, I was locked away in the studio this weekend, but it wasn’t all bad. I had the great pleasure of shooting the first of many album sessions with THePETEBOX.

I’ve known Pete for a few years, seen him perform loads of times and each time it gets better and better. He uses and loop pedal to layer up sounds that he produces only with his mouth. He can then add different instruments, re-arrange the track as he goes and, of course, sing over the top. Amazing to watch!

Last month he posted a video up to YouTube, a cover of a Pixies song called ‘Where Is My Mind?’. The video went nuts! It got half a million views in just a few days and the Pixies even posted a link to the video on their own website!

So this weekend Pete asked me into First Love Studios in Nottingham to produce the ‘Making Of’ film for his new album. So I went in and documented the process – the details of which I won’t go into now – but it looks great. It was great to talk through the technical processes with Pete and to see how he creates all the different layers in his sound. I also had a chat with fellow director Simon Ellis about his vision for the videos that will accompany the recordings.

For the film I’m using a Canon 7D with a few different lenses, although mainly a Sigma 30mm.

The session went really well. The guys in the studio were very welcoming – Pete, Simon, Matt and Henry (thanks for the coffee). The 80s movie quotes were in full flow and after all, that’s what counts. Looking forward to the next session.
